Art 1 Final Exam

Art 1 Final Exam

Required Question:
When working on your art in this course you had a range of choices in each project.  This was the first year Apex’s art department used the “Open Art Room.” Do you feel that this range and choice encouraged you to grow as an artist? Please explain how it did, if not, explain how it in.
I definitely believe that the "open art room" expanded my art horizon. I think that the "controlled freedom" really helped me explore myself as an artist. It also helped me experiment with a multitude of art types and materials. I really enjoyed having freedom in creativity and I think that this helped me as an artist overall. For example, the freedom that we were provided allowed me to create my two-in-one tree piece. The theme was "two things in one", and the flexibility of this theme allowed me to create my piece.

Choose 3 from the list below:
- Regardless of whether a project was successful or not, describe the one where you learned, grew, or developed the most from?  Please explain.
The sculpture piece helped me develop the most as an artist. Initially, the idea of doing a piece based on the photo of my family came up, and I pushed it away. I thought it would be too difficult. However, when I finally made the decision to do the piece, I was very pleased with the outcome. It required a significant amount of precision and attention to detail, and through doing this project, my skills expanded artistically. Also, I realized that taking risks is often very rewarding in art.

- What is a technique you used in your artwork that worked well? Explain what technique it was and why it was successful.
One technique that I have found especially useful in my art is layering of a variety of materials. I did this in a number of pieces, but the one that I most specifically enjoyed is my perspective piece. The piece is based off of a photo of my younger brother, and I portrayed the photo through a variety of watercolor, charcoal, and even sharpie. I think that the combination of materials helps the piece flow as a whole, and they all work together to create one colorful and detailed piece. Through layering, I realized that art is not restricted to one material per piece, as I had previously thought. Layering materials expanded my perspective and my artistic ability as a whole.

- Do over: If given the opportunity, which project would you do over? Describe why and how you would redo this project. Reasons might include choosing a different theme, using a different medium or creating a different idea completely. Include photo.
If given the opportunity, I would definitely like to redo my art journal project. I felt like I was rushed in doing this project, and I did not give myself enough time to complete it. If I had the chance to redo this piece, I would definitely add a wider variety of colors and more magazine photos. I absolutely love collages, and I think that the project had a lot of potential. My theme was "where I want to travel". If I had a do-over, I would definitely add more photos and spend more time paying attention to details.
