Art Journaling

My topic was "where I want to travel". I honestly just want to travel the whole world, and that is why I based my piece off of the world. 
Did you learn new techniques or processes as part of the work for this project?
In doing the art journaling project, I definitely was able to work on a process that I rarely use in my art. Using the layering process was really quite interesting, and I enjoyed using a variety of materials.
Did you gain skill with familiar materials?
I definitely gained skill with the tissue paper, paint, and collaging as a whole. I've created collages before, but I definitely gained knowledge about how to use this materials to their maximum potential. 
How did you respond to challenges that occurred as you worked? 
I had trouble initially when I was trying to figure out what I should do to portray my topic. In order to respond to this challenge, I wrote out a list of options and I thought over all of these options.
Did your work take an unexpected turn due to a mistake or did something happen that was unplanned?
I definitely did not expect to lay my piece out like I did. After cutting the continents out of the magazine, I had trouble figuring out how to organize it. I did not expect to organize it the way that I did. 

Sculpture Project

How did you use your own unique ideas in your work?
I used my own unique ideas in my piece because I loved this photo of my family. I used my own unique photo, and I used my own idea of transferring the photo to the clay slate.
Did you use a source for inspiration, then combine it with your own ideas to make it original?
My mother was definitely my source of inspiration, and I used this photo to create a piece showing how wonderful I think she is. I used the clay to recreate the image uniquely and creatively. 
How did you respond to challenges that occurred as you worked? 
While I was making my piece, I got frustrated once or twice. I got frustrated because I didn't think that my piece was working the way I wanted it to. I responded to this by taking a break from working on my piece. This helped clear my mind.
Did your work take an unexpected turn due to a mistake or did something happen that was unplanned?
When I was initially making the piece, I did not plan on painting anything in the background. However, I decided to add a background in the process of making the piece, and I ended up liking it a lot better with the background. 

Land Art- Two Turtles

Alex and I created a land art piece depicting two different turtles. We used a water repellent spray to create the effect seen in the photo. 

Did you learn new techniques or processes as part of the work for this project?

In doing this project, I learned that there is a much wider variety of ways to create an art piece than I had imagined. The idea was Alex's, and I think that it looks so well  put together and well thought out. Did you gain skill with familiar materials? I both gained skill with familiar materials, and gained skill with completely unfamiliar                                                     materials. Cutting out the template required detail and precision, and in doing so I  gained skill in working with details.

Did you try something that you weren’t sure about as part of this project?

We were definitely initially unsure about using the water repellent spray in our piece. However, we were both really happy with the way it turned out. (We were also just surprised that it actually worked!)

Did you pick a material or technique that was new or different over something that was familiar?

We honestly did not expect the spray to be a success, and we considered multiple options. We could have simply used paint, but we instead chose to take a more risky route. 

Shibori Dye Pieces- Silksational Company

The creator of these pieces is Sylvia Riley. She creates a variety of dyed items, including silk scarves, fancy scarves, clothing blanks, and wool fabric pieces. Her pieces have all been put up for sale. Her company is called "Silksational Textile Art". A typical piece may sell from between $3-$100. The company is entirely based in Sydney, Australia and owned by Sylvia Riley. In addition to their sale of clothing, they also sell dyes, chemicals, and other materials used for their clothing production.

Her work seems to be primarily retail. Although they are beautiful, they are primarily created for sale. One interesting aspect of the company is that they also offer workshops for Shibori Dye, along with necessary materials for the creation of these pieces of art.

How did you use your own unique ideas in your work?
It seems to be a reoccuring theme for me to use my family as a source of inspiration. This piece was no exception. I used my younger sister as a source of inspiration, and I used a photo that I took of her to paint my piece. I used my unique ideas by incorporating very specific details, and by using a photo that I had took. 
Did you use a source for inspiration, then combine it with your own ideas to make it original?
My source of inspiration was the photo I had taken, and I brought it to life through my painting. I think that I made the original photo through the detail I painted in the hair, and through the detail of the profile. 
Did you learn new techniques or processes as part of the work for this project?
Through my project, I learned how to draw/paint a profile accurately and "cleanly". I was proud of the profile and the time and effort that I put in to painting a clean, defined profile.
Did you gain skill with familiar materials?
I was relatively unfamiliar with watercolor, and I honestly did not very much enjoy using them on this project initially. However, I progressively became more comfortable with this material through this project. Although I do not think that my water color skills are fully "developed" yet, I enjoyed gaining skill with this unfamiliar material.

Perspective

Perspective Piece

How did you use your own unique ideas in your work?
My perspective piece is based off of a photo I took of my younger brother. In this way, the photo was already my unique piece. I loved the picture, and I have wanted to paint it for the longest time.
Did you use a source for inspiration, then combine it with your own ideas to make it original?
My source of inspiration was the photo of Wes, but I combined both watercolor and charcoal to create a unique piece. I also used a variation of colors to make my piece unique and appealing.
Did you learn new techniques or processes as part of the work for this project?
Through doing this project, I really enjoyed using a mixture of two, very different materials. I was able to establish a technique to combine these two and create a piece that looked "clean".
Did you gain skill with familiar materials?
I haven't really worked much with watercolors on any projects that I have done up to this point, so I really enjoyed getting more comfortable with watercolor painting. I generally do not like working with watercolors because I find it messy and difficult. However, this piece opened my mind to using watercolors, and I ended up really enjoying it.

100 Cans of Campbell's Soup

•Term "Pop Art" was established by the “Independent Group (IG)”

•Appreciates material culture

Our piece is called 100 Cans of Campbell's Soup by Andy Warhol. He was considered the "Pope of Pop". 

- What each person in your group worked on.
Alex, Tess, Nicole, and myself worked on the red and white areas of the cans, as well as the details of the soup cans. Nicole worked on the yellow circles, and Alex and I completed the powerpoint.
-If you were to do this project again, what would you change and why?
I think that our overall finished piece turned out well. However, I wish we had more time to complete the project, because this would have allowed for more detail in our piece.
